ZonMw grant for research on improving online self-help for gambling problems
In September 2025, the research project Buddy & Co will launch! This project is a collaboration between Arkin/Jellinek, the Trimbos Institute, and the University of Zurich. The goal of the project is to enhance the effectiveness and broader use of the online self-help module for individuals experiencing gambling problems.
Buddy & Co focuses on improving the free-of-charge and anonymous Zelfhulp Gokken (Self-Help Gambling) module. This online intervention, recognized by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), is designed for individuals who want to change their gambling behavior. In co-creation with users and their loved ones, the intervention will be further developed with:
-
an improved buddy feature
-
a new module addressing cognitive distortions related to gambling, such as the gambler’s fallacy and the illusion of control.
The aim of the project is to provide earlier and better support to people struggling with gambling issues. By comparing three different versions of the self-help module, we will examine which approach is most effective in terms of usage, satisfaction, and reduction in gambling problems.
The project is funded through the ZonMw program line Prevention of Gambling Addiction and will be carried out by Anneke Goudriaan (Arkin/AUMC), Judith Noijen (Jellinek Prevention/PhD candidate), Matthijs Blankers (Arkin/Trimbos), Tony van Rooij (Trimbos), Anouk Tuijman (Trimbos), Michael Schaub (University of Zurich), Chris Maagd (Arkin), Tom Bart (Jellinek Prevention), and Floor van Bakkum (Jellinek Prevention).
