Wim van den Brink (1952)

Background:
After he studied Medicine (Free University, Amsterdam), from which he graduated in 1981, het was trained as a psychiatric epidemiologist at the University of Groningen (trainer: Prof. Robert Giel) and Columbia University in New York (trainer: Prof. Bruce Dohrenwend). In 1989, he attained his Ph.D. degree with a thesis on the reliability and validity of the diagnosis of DSM-III personality disorders (supervision: Prof. Robert Giel en Dr. Hans Ormel).

In 1992, he was appointed Extraordinary Professor of Clinical Epidemiology and Addiction Healthcare and since 1997 he is a full Professor of Psychiatry and Addiction at the Academic Medical Center of the University of Amsterdam (AMC-UvA).

In 1993, he was a co-founder of the Amsterdam Institute for Addiction Research (AIAR) with Professor Jan Walburg as its first director. In 1995, he was appointed director of the AIAR.

In 2005, he received the first Science-award from the Netherlands Psychiatric Association.

He has been (co)author of more than 350 international and 150 Dutch scientific publications and chapters in books. He supervised more than 40 dissertations. Today, he is supervising about 15 Ph.D. students.
