1. Patient satisfaction in mental health care: Determinants and causal relations to treatment process and outcome
Goal of the study:
Patient satisfaction is an important outcome of care and is often perceived as an indicator of the quality of treatment. The results of patient satisfaction surveys are used as critical indicators for the quality of care.
Two basic assumptions were tested in the present study:
1) The assumption that satisfaction scores are determined by the quality of treatment and the context of such;
2) the assumption that satisfaction scores are determined by treatment outcome.

Research questions:
Are patient characteristics, therapist characteristics and organizational characteristics predictors for the satisfaction with treatment? What relations exist between treatment process characteristics and patient satisfaction? What are the cross-sectional and longitudinal relations between treatment outcome and patient satisfaction?

2. Instant lottery addiction in the Netherlands
Goal of the study:
When the instant lottery (Kraslot) was introduced in the Netherlands, the risks of becoming addicted to this new form of gambling were not well researched. For this reason, the Dutch authorities requested epidemiological research. The goal of the present study is therefore to explore the extent to which participation in an instant lottery constitutes a risk factor for the development of gambling addiction. The second goal of the present study is to develop an instrument for the assessment of the severity of gambling addiction.

Research questions:
Three research questions were formulated. What is the prevalence of addiction to the instant lottery in the Netherlands? What is the incidence of instant lottery addiction in a group of “problem players”? Does frequent participation in the instant lottery lead to the development of addiction and/or participation in other problematic chance games?
